Olympics men’s football winner odds: Hosts bid to reach semi-finals

Japan v New Zealand match odds

Japan have hardly been tested and the host nation take on 100/1 gold medal outsiders New Zealand in the quarter-final.

A 1-0 win over South Africa, a 2-1 success over Mexico and a 4-0 thumping of France – with goals from Hiroki Sakai, Takefusa Kubo, Koki Miyoshi and Daizen Maeda – meant Japan topped their group. They are 2/9 to beat their opponents and 6/1 to win the gold medal.

Real Madrid star Kubo has scored in each of Japan’s games and his side are 3/4 to win to nil and 4/5 to lead at half-time and full-time.

New Zealand have exceeded expectations, with Burnley’s Chris Wood (pictured above) sealing a 1-0 win over the Republic of Korea. A 3-2 defeat by Honduras was a setback but the Kiwis earned their quarter-final spot with a 0-0 draw against Romania.

They are 14/1 to beat Japan in 90 minutes and 13/2 to qualify for the semi-finals. It is 7/5 that both teams score.

Brazil v Egypt match odds

At 6/4, Brazil are the second favourites for gold on the Olympics men’s football winner odds list.

Defending champions Brazil claimed a 3-1 win over Saudi Arabia to progress, following a 4-2 victory over Germany and a 0-0 draw with Ivory Coast.

Everton’s Richarlison has been instrumental in their wins, scoring five times, including a hat-trick against Germany.

Brazil are 4/11 to beat Egypt in 90 minutes and it is 20/23 for both sides to score.

Egypt have not fared too badly without Liverpool marksman Mo Salah.

They opened their account with a draw against Spain before losing to 1-0 to Argentina but goals from Ahmed Rayan and Amar Hamdy were enough to beat Australia and put them through to the knockout phase.

Egypt are 15/2 to beat Brazil and 33/1 to win gold.

Republic of Korea v Mexico

Despite starting slowly with a defeat to New Zealand, the Republic of Korea thumped Romania 4-0 and Honduras 6-0 to progress.

They are 14/1 to win gold, according to the Olympics men’s football winner odds list, and are 21/10 to beat Mexico in 90 minutes.

Goals could flow in Yokohama as 2012 London winners Mexico have also been scoring for fun.

They are 12/1 to win gold and 27/20 to win the quarter-final in 90 minutes, following their 4-1 opening win over France and their final 3-0 success over South Africa.

It is 7/2 that they win but concede and 8/11 that both sides score.
