Chelsea’s defensive prowess under Tuchel has turned the Blues into a tough nut to crack in the biggest games as Manchester City found out in the Champions League final in Porto. They will be looking for a carbon copy of their heroics on that occasion as they look to stop a Liverpool attack firing on all cylinders.

One issue Tuchel may have to resolve is Romelu Lukaku’s prolonged lack of form. The Belgium international was left out for the midweek game in Europe and that may be the case here, as Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic could get the nod once more to offer the Blues greater variety in attack.  

Both got on the scoresheet against Lille and could do so again at Wembley. Havertz is 9/1 to break the deadlock, while Pulisic can be backed at 7/2 to get on the scoresheet at anytime in Carabao Cup betting tips.

Chelsea have won the last twice these two have met in domestic cup competition, with the Blues winning 2-0 en-route to the FA Cup final in 2020. A repeat of that scoreline is 14/1, while a Chelsea win to nil can be backed at 21/5. 

However, it was Liverpool that won the UEFA Super Cup when the teams clashed in 2019. The match finished 2-2 after extra-time, which is 14/1 this time around, with the Red lifting the cup via penalties and both teams are available at 10/1 to win by that method.

Key trends 

Liverpool have won four of their last five to nil, while for Chelsea it is only a slightly worse record, keeping the opposition quiet in four of their last six.  

As much as both sides are blessed with top-class attacking talent, it could be their respective defences that decide where the trophy heads, and it is 23/10 for the Blues to keep a clean sheet and 5/2 for Liverpool to win to nil.  

Although quick off the mark against Leeds in midweek, it has often taken Liverpool until the second half to hit top gear of late. That would give Chelsea a chance to take the advantage early and they are 13/10 to score first, while it is 10/11 for the first half to end in a stalemate.
