It is a disappointing turnout for this longstanding handicap but it does feature an intriguing rematch between Northumberland Plate second and third KIRCHNER and Synergism. The last named is progressive but James Owen's gelding is a new player on the staying scene and can maintain his superiority. Fireblade also commands respect, while Ghaiyya isn't entirely dismissed.[Richard Russell]
