Warwick 12.45 – Gee Force Flyer
Gee Force Flyer likes real soft ground, and it hasn’t been soft enough for him on his last couple of starts. We will see what the ground is like on the day, and if Olly is not happy with it, we may not even run him. He is a horse we like, and when he gets his conditions, he will be winning races over hurdles.
Warwick 1.52 – Wade Out
Wade Out has made a good start to his chase career, with two wins from two starts. He is a horse that runs very lazily and needs a few reminders. I think he has improved massively since switching to fences. This race is a great stepping stone towards Cheltenham. The ratings suggest he is the one to beat, and hopefully, he can maintain his 100% record over fences.
Warwick 2.25 – Dr Waksman
I haven’t ridden Dr Waksman before, but he was a decent horse on the Flat. Chris Gordon’s runners are in great form, so I’ve chosen to ride this horse over Ukantango. This will be his first run in a handicap hurdle, and hopefully he can work with a mark of 107.
Ukantango has just changed ownership. He had an injury, and his form since then has not been as good. I think he will need this run, and he should be back to his best later in the year.
Warwick 2.55 – Resplendent Grey
I was very disappointed with Resplendent Grey in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury. He got into a bad position early in the race and never really recovered. I think that run can be forgiven, and I am really looking forward to getting back on board, as I still have a lot of confidence in him.
L’Homme Presse is obviously the highest-rated runner in the race, but we will be getting 8lb from him. Myretown also deserves a lot of respect, based on what he achieved last season. It’s a good race, but I wouldn’t swap my horse for any other in the field.
Warwick 3.32 – Long Draw
Long Draw ran poorly at Cheltenham on his latest outing. That is very unusual for him, as he normally produces his best at Prestbury Park. He is a horse that has been rising in the weights without winning. His last winning mark was 128, and he is now off a rating of 136. I do think he is capable off this mark, but I wouldn’t say he was well handicapped.
Frozen January has allowed me to hit the slopes
It is always a quiet period after Sandown’s Veterans’ Chase Day, and even more so this year with all the abandoned meetings we have had. I think there is some poor racing scheduled after the Christmas period. There have been discussions between some of the leading jockeys and trainers about there being a week or 10 days without jumps racing in the middle of January. You get so many meetings off at this time of the year, so maybe an enforced break would not be a bad thing.
I took a break earlier this week with the likes of Ben Jones, Gavin Sheehan and my brother on a skiing trip. I am not the best skier in the world, but it does help take your mind off racing for a few days. We don’t take too many risks on the slopes, but it is great fun, especially alongside some of my closest friends in the weighing room.
Looking ahead, the Cheltenham Festival will soon come along. We have trials days at the end of the month, and then a lot of the horses will be put away for the Festival. My leading hope at the meeting looks set to be Haiti Couleurs. I cannot wait to ride him in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. It is obviously a race I’d love to win, and it would be a career highlight should I ride him to victory in the Blue Riband contest.
Olly Murphy will use the next two months to set out his Cheltenham Festival plans. He will have plenty of runners across the week. Strong Leader has fared well at the highest level, so I am sure the Stayers’ Hurdle will be under consideration for him.
