Luke Morris gives us his early thoughts on the All-Weather Championships and a horse he would love to ride on Saturday!

It is just over a month until All-Weather Championships Finals Day takes place on March 25 and we’ve now got a good idea of who will be turning up at Lingfield. With that in mind, I’ve had a look through each of the races on Good Friday and picked out the horses I think will be hardest to beat:

3 Year Old Mile Championship

I think this is quite a tight division with no standout horses at the moment. The one that would appeal to me most is Cape Speed. He’s won his last two starts and is an improving horse for Mark Johnston. Now he’s on the upgrade he may well be good enough to win on Good Friday.

3 Year Old Sprint Championship

Gracious John is still the horse to beat in this division. Even though he got beat at Chelmsford last time I’m sure he’s the best horse going for this race. It wasn’t ideal how he went around Chelmsford the other day and he’s gone around well Lingfield before, so as long as he’s physically fine he’ll be tough to pass.

Sprint Championship

This is a really competitive tight race. The horses to focus on I think are Goken and Lancelot Du Lac and of the two I would go for Lancelot Du Lac. He’s shown a really good level of ability on turf and all-weather and he’s is going to be hard for the others to beat.

Mile Championship

Mindurownbusiness was very impressive the last day at Wolverhampton in a conditions race. For me, this horse has improved again since last year when he was unlucky not to win on Finals Day. I’d be very surprised if he was beaten on Good Friday granted normal luck in running.

Marathon Championship

This looks a tricky race and Moonrise Landing looks the one with the most scope for improvement. She was impressive when winning at Wolverhampton, she’s probably got a bit more to come and she’ll go there fresh and on song. Anglophile would be a solid alternative against her.

Fillies & Mares Championship

It looks like this race may fall apart now with the likes of Lamar and Don’t Be retired. For me it leaves it all open for Cold As Ice. She ran very well in a Listed race over six furlongs last time and was slightly unlucky that day as she was a bit further back that ideal in a slowly-run race. I’d don’t think she’ll be beaten.

Coral Easter Classic

If Let’s Go comes back from Dubai he would be respected in this race. In general the race lacks a little bit of depth this year so for me the solid horse in there is the all-weather specialist Grendisar. He’s a hostage to fortune in the way he has to be ridden and he was good when winning at Lingfield last time.

Looking at Lingfield this weekend, if I was able to take one ride it would be on Australian Queen in the 1m fillies’ maiden (2.00). She’s well-bred being the half-sister to Arabian Queen and she’s bumped into a couple of nice sorts on her two starts so far. This looks a race where she’s more than capable of losing her maiden tag.
