Doncaster 12.25 – Rightsotom
It’s another massive Saturday for us, with six runners at Cheltenham’s big December meeting, but we start the day at Doncaster. Rightsotom won impressively over hurdles here last season, so we’re hoping the return to the course will suit him.
This will be his third start over fences, he ran a lovely race to finish third in a Grade 2 at Wincanton last time, and this has been the plan since then. There are only six runners, but some big yards are represented, including Zurich from Henry De Bromhead’s, so it’s a really competitive, tight novice handicap, but we should be right in the mix and we like our chances.
Cheltenham 12.40 – First Confession
First Confession hasn’t hit top form so far this season, but this three miles trip suits him, and this novice handicap company is where he should be running. Brendan [Powell] felt he should have made a bit more use of him at Kempton last time, so I’m sure that’s something he’ll look at here. Cheltenham should suit him, and in another tight little race, I hope he won’t be too far away.
Cheltenham 1.15 – Ilovethenightlife
Ilovethenightlife has finished second on both her starts this season, but that doesn’t really tell the whole story, as she’s a mare who doesn’t always put her best foot forward, as was the case at Bangor last time, but her ability still got her home in second. She’s more than capable of going close here, but she has become a little bit inconsistent, and in a big field like this I really don’t know what sort of race she will run.
Cheltenham 2.25 – JPR One & Triple Trade
We run two in this competitive two miler, and Brendan was always going to ride JPR One. He’s the class horse in the race, so has to carry top weight, but we’re racing on fresh ground this weekend, so soft ground shouldn’t bother him. He’s run well to finish third on both his starts this season, and another similar effort here would give him every chance.
Triple Trade won here last month, he’s up five pounds for that which won’t make life easy here as aged nine now, I’m not sure how much improvement there is to come from him. Sammy Twiston-Davies takes over from Brendan, and this looks like a race that if you ran it five times, you would get five different results, but both of mine are good enough to get involved.
Cheltenham 3.00 – Kasino Des Mottes
I've been really looking forward to running this horse, he's not a flashy type at home at all, in fact he doesn't show an awful lot on the gallops, but he clearly saves it for the track, as he followed up a good debut effort here by winning at Kempton, and the second horse home that day has come out and won since.
We are stepping him up in grade here as well as trip, and while I think the extra couple of furlongs will suit him, the step up in class will tell us where we are with him and will enable us to plan the rest of the season. I would not be surprised to see him run well here, there’s something about his attitude I just really like.
Cheltenham 3.35 – Sweet Caryline
Sweet Caryline Has been brilliant for us this season racking up a three timer and going up 17 pounds in the handicap as a result. This is another step up in class after her Wincanton win, but she deserves to take her chance on a big day like this.
There is a slight question mark over the ground as this will be the softer surface she has encountered, I'm not saying she won't go on it and her action would suggest she will but we won't know for sure until she tries. In her favour is the low weight she carries here, that certainly won't be slowing her down.
