This is always a fairly quiet time of the year for us, and it’s even quieter with the heavy rain meaning plenty of meetings have been lost, so hopefully Wincanton will pass its Saturday morning inspection as we have a couple entered.
Lord Of Thunder has finished second and first here on his last two starts, and although he carries a penalty for that victory, he’s a big strong horse who should be able to carry the weight and cope with testing ground. This looks a good opportunity for him to gain more experience and build his confidence, hopefully on route to bigger things.
Seymour Promise is a horse with bits and pieces of form, but I think he’s one of those ‘clever’ horses, who just does a bit too much thinking, rather than putting it all in on the track. He also hasn’t taken to chasing quite as well as we’d have hoped, but he should handle the ground, and that would give him a small chance.

Plumpton stages a really good Sunday card, so once again let’s hope the rain relents enough for it take place, as there’s some excellent prize money on offer. Scarface finished third here last month, a finishing position that didn’t look likely through the race, as he had a terrible passage throughout, made a few mistakes, and got bumped from pillar to post.
We’ll ride him positively here, off a low weight, and while this is a competitive little race, I think he’s capable of running a big race off this current mark.
Eldorado Allen is having his first run over hurdles for nearly four years, but I just thought we’d mix things up as he’s run some big races over fences without getting his head in front. I entered him in a 0 -145 race at Chepstow to see what handicap mark he’d get over hurdles, and was pleasantly surprised by 143, so with £75,000 up for grabs here, it was an easy decision to come here.
Fred [Gingell] will take off another five pounds, so the horse will think he’s running free! I really like his chances, and if he can run up the form of his Coral Gold Cup fourth, that should see him go close here.
Fred also rides Rose Of Arcadia, in the Sussex National. She’s not just taking on mares here, but she jumps well, she stays, and she handles this sort of ground, so with Fred taking the weight off, she could go well.
