Hugo Palmer previews his four runners at Doncaster, Epsom and Lingfield on Saturday, June 6, 2026 and offers his thoughts on the Derby in his latest exclusive blog.

Jazz Queen - Doncaster - 1.55 race odds
Be The Standard - Epsom - 4.40 race odds
Roman Dragon - Epsom - 5.55 race odds
Fans Favourite - Lingfield - 6.05 race odds
Jazz Queen was entered to run at Hamilton on Friday, but ground conditions have been a key consideration for her. We learned plenty when she ran at Ayr – she handled the ground well enough, but it became clear that she really wants a quicker surface. She's got quite small feet and seems happiest when she can spring off fast ground.
On that basis, Hamilton was never an ideal fit, whereas Saturday's conditions look more suitable. Jazz Queen has the benefit of racecourse experience and, if she gets her preferred ground, she should give a good account of herself.
Be The Standard heads to Epsom after a very encouraging preparation. He's by Frankel out of Galileo bloodlines and there was a fair bit of excitement around him when he won his maiden.
The rain that has arrived should be in his favour and I think he stays this trip well. He perhaps found things happening a little quickly on his reappearance at Chester, and I suspect he'll be seen to even better effect later in the season when stepping up further.
He's come out of Chester in great shape and has trained really nicely since. When we bought him, we dreamed he might turn into a Derby horse. He's not lining up in the Derby itself, but running on Derby Day is the next best thing.

Roman Dragon takes on a slightly different challenge at Epsom. He's very much a sprinter and tends to be at his best around turning tracks. Chester, of course, has been his happy hunting ground, and horses that run well there often adapt well to Epsom's unique demands.
The downhill nature of the track will be something new for him, but he's a strong-travelling horse these days and should cope with it. He didn't quite see out the trip last time, but he's come out of that race very well and deserves his chance.
It will be interesting to see how he handles the track, but he's in good form and should enjoy the experience.
Fans Favourite produced a solid effort at Windsor last time and we've spent a bit of time debating where to run him. Small field sizes and ground conditions have played a part in that decision-making process, and we're still learning exactly how effective he is when conditions become softer.
I do think he's improved and he's certainly capable of winning races. He's not a superstar, but he's a genuine horse who continues to progress and hopefully there's a race in him before too long.
Aidan O'Brien holds a lot of the aces in this year's Derby field, with two of the top three in the betting. Benvenuto Cellini was impressive at Chester when winning the Chester Vase. He proved his stamina that day, and with Ryan Moore on board, he may be the one they all have to beat. However, if the rain continues to fall, that could help Pierre Bonnard's chances.
