2026 Mildmay Novices' Chase contenders and tip

A good sized field for a race of this class goes to post for the Mildmay Novices’ Chase; eight runners and plenty of cases to be made among them.

Jamie Snowden’s Wendigo tends to go quite well on good ground and, on his best form, he has a good chance. He fell at Cheltenham when last seen in the Brown Advisory, but has finished close to the winner of the race in the past and has the ability. Today could be his day.

Willie Mullins sends Gold Dancer into the mix, who is best on spring ground and looks very competitive after a good second of 18 last time out in the Golden Miller at Cheltenham. Now back into Graded company, he tops the ratings and looks overpriced on his form over shorter distances. His one performance over three miles this term was unlikely his true going and he could represent good value for this race.

Miami Magic is a consistent sort who could cause an upset here, after winning his first try over this distance very impressively at Newbury in February. He has been freshened up since and could take a good step forward here, though he might be in need of the run.

Regent’s Stroll is tricky. While a very able horse who could likely win this on his physical ability, his tendency to be too keen in the early stages and not finish off his race might count him out over three miles.

Doyen Quest could be a nice each-way play for the Skelton team. He likes good ground and performed well last time at Windsor. He may need the run to get going again, though, having been off since January.

Coral’s big-race tip: Gold Dancer at 4/1
