Premier League top scorer contenders

The race for the prestigious Golden Boot promises to be a thriller in the 2022/23 season after some eye-catching pieces of transfer business this summer.

Last season went down to the final match of the campaign and another entertaining battle looks likely as we assess the chances of the leading contenders in the Premier League top scorer odds.

Erling Haaland

Haaland’s exploits at Borussia Dortmund, where he scored 86 goals in 89 games, made him one of the hottest properties in world football and he followed in the footsteps of his father Alf Inge by joining Manchester City.

The signing ended City’s long search for a specialist centre-forward to replace record goalscorer Sergio Aguero after failing in their attempts to prise Harry Kane away from Tottenham last summer.

The Norwegian was the 5/2 favourite in the Premier League top scorer odds at the start of the season and those odds have been cut to 11/8 after bagging three goals in as many games.

Haaland netted in City’s thrilling 3-3 draw at Newcastle on Sunday having registered a brace in the opening-day win at West Ham and looks to be one of the best Premier League signings of the summer.

Mohamed Salah

Salah was the joint-top scorer in the Premier League last season and is 4/1 to lead the way again.

The Liverpool forward has shared the prize in three of the last five campaigns and will again be a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s side, especially having committed his future to the club by extending his contract.

While Liverpool are yet to win this season, Salah has found the net on two occasions and more goals are expected from the Egypt international.

Harry Kane

Kane has finished as the Premier League top scorer outright on two occasions and shared the award with Salah in 2020/21 so it is little surprise to see him in among the leading contenders again at 11/2.

The Tottenham forward found himself in the unusual position of not being his club’s leading scorer last season but still managed 17 goals.

Kane has scored twice in three games this season to climb above Aguero in the all-time scorers’ list and is just two behind Andrew Cole in third.

The England captain also notched his 185th league goal – the most by a player for one club – in the win over Wolves at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It was also his 250th goal for the club and Jimmy Greaves’ record of 266 is surely under threat this season.

Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal were desperate for a new centre-forward this summer and Jesus could be their saviour after arriving from Manchester City for £45million.

He already has a good relationship with Gunners boss Mikel Arteta from their time at the Etihad and his versatility means he can expect to be a regular in the starting line-up, unlike at City where he was often on the bench.

The Brazilian has the added incentive of proving his form ahead of the World Cup and will have been a popular pick at 9/1 in the Premier League Golden Boot betting.

Those odds are now 13/2 after scoring twice – as well as having several other opportunities – to help Arsenal have the only 100 per cent record in the top flight after three games.

Best of the rest

Darwin Nunez has drifted to 20/1 in the Premier League top scorer odds after a mixed start to his Liverpool career.

The club-record signing from Benfica netted on his debut having come off the bench in the 2-2 draw at Fulham before being sent off for a headbutt as Liverpool were held by Crystal Palace, which resulted in a three-game suspension.

Aleksandar Mitrovic headed home a dramatic late winner to seal a 3-2 home London derby win for Fulham against Brentford.

The Serbia striker, quoted at 20/1, has had an all-action return to the Premier League, bagging a brace against Liverpool before missing a penalty in the goalless draw at Wolves.

Son Heung-min, who shared the award with Salah last season, is 25/1 to again come top of the charts having failed to get on the scoresheet so far this time for Tottenham.

Two-goal Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is the same price while Cristiano Ronaldo, dropped for Manchester United’s win over Liverpool and with speculation around his future at Old Trafford, is 33/1.

Wilfried Zaha also has three goals after netting in Crystal Palace’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Selhurst Park and is quoted at 50/1 in the Premier League top scorer odds.

Rodrigo is the early front-runner after taking his tally to four in Leeds’ terrific 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Elland Road.

The Spaniard is 66/1 to claim the award having become only the fourth Leeds player to score in each of the club’s first three league games of a top-flight season.
