Frida Fagerlund’s Sweden v Slovakia preview: impeccable defence will be the key to success for Sweden

It’s safe to say that the opening game against Spain turned out just like Janne Andersson hoped it would. Sweden were barely allowed to borrow the ball all night but still managed to produce the two biggest chances in the game.
Alexander Isak was on fire, causing the Spanish defence a massive headache, which probably means that he keeps his place for now. Will Andersson look past Marcus Berg’s apparent inability to score goals? I would be surprised if the forward was left out.
What might convince the coach to make some changes though, is the addition of Dejan Kulusevski who has finally been given a green light after testing negative for Covid-19. Whether Andersson sees the youngster as a midfielder or a centre-forward is not yet established. I assume the latter, based on the friendly against Armenia ahead of the tournament.
Don’t expect Sweden to park the bus against all their opponents, they can actually be a fun watch if they let loose a bit more. Andersson wasn’t apologetic at all after the game in Seville – an impeccable defence will always be the key to success for this team.
