Bookies fear Great British Bake Off finalist Frances

Published:

Bookmaker Coral has suspended betting on the outcome of Great British Bake Off ahead of tomorrow night’s final show, after a rush of bets for Frances Quinn – the original outsider in the betting.

The firm made Kimberley Wilson the 11-8 favourite when they opened betting last week, with Ruby Tandoh 6-4 and Frances 5-2, but punters rushed to back the latter competitor, and her odds tumbled to 11-10 favourite before they took the decision to pull the plug.

“Great British Bake Off is such a hit with viewers that it is being moved to BBC1 next year, and we reckoned it would be a hit with punters too, so we became the first bookie ever to offer our customers the chance to have a flutter on the show last week,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“After the semi-final we favoured star baker Kimberley to rise to the occasion in the final, while Ruby may be Paul Hollywood’s favourite, but as far as punters were concerned it was all about Frances, with more than 90% of the bets taken for her,” added Stevens.

“Because the show is pre-recorded, we always knew someone somewhere would know who has won, so we took only small stakes, and kept a close eye on the bets coming in, but we’ll be tuning in nervously and hoping this gamble goes astray,” concluded Stevens.
